Lifting Mechanics

A common cause for low back pain in the general population is lifting heavy items with poor body mechanics. Learning proper lifting techniques is not reserved for those in the weight room at the gym. Anyone who repeatedly picks up or carries items, be it for work, hobby, or household tasks, needs to have their posture evaluated while performing these movements. Doing so will avoid the excessive amount of stress and strain placed on the spine that can lead to pain and disability. Learning to “lift with your legs” instead of your back takes time and practice just like breaking any other bad habit. As movement professionals, physical therapists are uniquely qualified to evaluate lifting mechanics, investigate what is leading to the dysfunction, and lay out a plan that will make lifting with proper body mechanics seem like a normal part of daily life.
